Outlook is incredibly slow when dealing with messages with large attachments. I used outlook express until about seven months ago. The speed there was better, but still not very good.

I use AVG free edition antivirus. It is set to inspect incoming messages. I turned off the outgoing scanner as it crippled the programs at times.

Is this something caused by AVG, or would it be the same with a different antivirus solution?

Thank you very kindly

Chosen Answer:

It depends on our internet connection. If the speed would slow then download will become slow. U can use the following software to download

1. Download Manager
2. Download Accelerator
3. Free Download Manager

I have AVG free and know how to check for file sizes, im just planning to download songs.

Chosen Answer:

I would change anti-virus programs to start. Avira is probably your best bet for free. Also if you got HIPS program like threatfire, or Comodo if you open a song and it was a trojan and tried to install you could stop it. The odds are very good that you will get infected. Sooner or later. You may have a real good chance of stopping it with Comodo with defense + turn on. If you click a file and comodo pops up with a warning you would no something was trying to install.

I have Zone alarm firewall & AVG Antivirus both r free edition & r fully updated. I have NTFS file system on all hard drives.
Sometimes the firewall turns off on it’s own & i have to restart the firewall to make it active.
I also use utorrent & i have allowed the firewall to allow Only Access to the net but not to act as server.

Chosen Answer:

A/V turning off all on it’s own is usually an indication of an infection… sometimes it can just be a reinstallation issue if lucky… I would look into that and maybe do a scan from one of the top vendor websites that offer web scanning..

So the answer to your question is YES but a properly configured firewall will help in that not happening…

Basically the way it works is an attacker will scan for open ports… and will scan for programs running on the computer that is unpatched and has known vulnerabilities.
If any of these are found they are points of possible entry.

So if you don’t have windows updates with the latest security patches then they could fund an MS vulnerability and attack it and possibly gain entry even through your firewall.

There’s even something called “Firewalking” that goes around the firewall looking for ways in…

The more untrustworthy type services you have running (such as torrent softeware) the more chances of finding the right hole to crawl in through.

If on top of all that the attacker actually knows your IP and is specifically targetting you then you could be in for some trouble.

You can type netstat -a at the command prompt and see what’s open for connections.. an even better tool which does not come with windows is FPORT which will show you specifically what program is connecting on what port.
Very useful if you think you’ve got extra connections happening. You will be shocked if you run either of these while you have a chat program or a torrent program running…

Obvuously having a/v, firewall, etc.. running and up to date and all things patched will help keep attackers out.. but nothing can take the place of wise internet habits.

good luck.

Hi, my new laptop came with three years of McAfee security center. So far it doesnt seem to lag my computer. Ive always used avg free but since the program came free i am considering just keeping it. I just want a strong virus protection program. Should I keep McAfee or get free AVG?

Chosen Answer:

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.0 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

I have a paid subscription for Norton AV (two years); but I recently asked a question, and several people recommended free AV downloads and other free software to download in order to keep my computer clean.

If I can get just as good, or even better protection and computer service from these free downloads, I am wondering why I should pay for the Norton protection; or is there some catch.

What experiences are people having with these free downloads?

Thanks.
Some of these free downloads are:

Chosen Answer:

It all depends if you need better protection than the free AV’s have to offer. If you use the internet occasionally you can get by with free anti-virus software. I personally use the internet a lot and I need better protection, I use NOD32 which has over 99% detection rate. Don’t be surprised if AVG or Avast! miss a virus and you wonder why your computer is no longer working.

The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/

The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.

I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

http://www.consumersearch.com/www/software/antivirus-software/

If you still want a free anti-virus I recommend in this order (install only one):

1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It’s cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update

I don’t recommend using the Web Shield at this time due to other issues, so simply re-install AVG in custom mode and make sure you uncheck Web Shield.
